Lindisfarne
The sock is named for the holy island of Lindisfarne off the coast of northern England.

The raid on the priory of Lindisfarne in 793 is now often used as the starting point of the Viking age. Before that time, around 715, the priory produced the Lidisfarne Gospels, an illustrated manuscript of some of the gospels. As many of the beautiful books of that age, the pages are heavy with scrollwork and interlocking illustrations. These motifs have always been a point of inspiration and lead to the creation of the Lindisfarne sock pattern, which features small scrolls on the side of the sock and a central grand cable motif down the front.

The pattern contains both charts and written directions for the cables. It is a top-down pattern.
