The Staple Tank is a super simple, classic vest-style tank, that is a perfect staple piece for layering or as a summer piece! The tank is knit top down, knit flat in front/back sections, then joined after the arm hole and knit in the round. It has a stockinette body with the option for bust and waist shaping. It features a rounded scoop neck, with ribbed collar, armholes and hem. It is a size inclusive design, written in 20 sizes, every 2 inches / 5 cm from 24-62 inch / 60-155 cm finished upper bust, with an easily customizable full bust and waist. It is intended to fit with 0-4 inches / 0-10 cm of negative ease and sit at a cropped length (the length can be altered to your preferences).

Sizes 15-20 are untested. If you would like to knit any of these sizes and provide feedback, I would be happy to refund your pattern purchase.

Finished upper bust of:
24(26, 28, 30)(32, 34, 36)(38, 40, 42)(44, 46, 48)(50, 52, 54)(56, 58, 60, 62) inches /
60(65, 70, 75)(80, 85, 90)(95, 100, 105)(110, 115, 120)(125, 130, 135)(140, 145, 150, 155) cm

To fit actual upper bust of:
24-28(26-30, 28-32, 30-34)(32-36, 34-38, 36-40)(38-42, 40-44, 42-46)(44-48, 46-50, 48-52)(50-54, 52-56, 54-58)(56-60, 58-62, 60-64, 62-66) inches /
60-70(65-75, 70-80, 75-85)(80-90, 85-95, 90-100)(95-105, 100-110, 105-115)(110-120, 115-125, 120-130)(125-135, 130-140, 135-145)(140-150, 145-155, 150-160, 155-165) cm

Note: The sizes reflect the FINISHED upper bust measurements in inches / cm of the tank, and listed below you can see the recommended actual upper bust range for each size. The tank is designed for 0-4 inches / 0-10 cm of negative ease. To determine the size you wish to knit, measure your upper bust and subtract 0-4 inches / 0-10 cm to find the closest size. If you are in between sizes, size down for a snugger fit, or up for a looser fit. My sample is knit with 4 inches / 10 cm of negative ease at the upper bust (Size 5 on a 36 inch / 90 cm upper bust and 30 inch / 75 cm waist). If you are intending to have a fitted tank with bust shaping, I recommend using 4 inches / 10 cm of negative ease to ensure that you don’t have any loose/baggy sections. Some testers used up to 6 inches / 15 cm of negative ease.

For yardage calculations, the estimated full bust of the tank will be ____ inches/cm larger than upper bust (but can be easily adjusted as needed if smaller or larger):
2(2, 2, 2)(2, 2, 4)(4, 4, 4)(4, 4, 4)(4, 4, 4)(4, 6, 6, 6) inches /
5(5, 5, 5)(5, 5, 10)(10, 10, 10)(10, 10, 10)(10, 10, 10)(10, 15, 15, 15) cm

The full bust and waist measurements of this tank are quite customizable, so the upper bust is the best number to choose size based off of. Once you join in the round, you can work increases or decreases to fit your full bust, as well as bust darts and waist decreases as needed.

Needles recommended:
4.5 mm / US 7 / UK 7 (or size needed to obtain gauge) - main body
4 mm / US 6 / UK 8 (or size needed to obtain gauge) - ribbing
Cord length to match your upper bust measurement as well as 9-16 inch / 22.5-40 cm cord for the collar and armhole ribbing (or DPNs or 32-40 inch / 80-100 cm cord for the magic loop method).

Gauge (blocked):
Using 4.5 mm / US 7 / UK 7 (body) needles and working in stockinette
I recommend swatching both in the round and flat, as parts of the tank are knit flat before joining in the round. If your flat gauge is significantly different than your round gauge, you can adjust needle size for the flat portion.

4 x 4 inch / 10 x 10 cm = 19 sts x 26 rows/rounds - working in stockinette
4 x 4 inch / 10 x 10 cm = 20 sts x 32 rows/rounds - working in 1 x 1 ribbing

Yarn recommended:
Any DK (3) weight yarn (or Fingering held double) that you can match gauge with.

Sample #1 yarn (red) - Sewrella Silk Sock held double (50% Superwash Merino Wool, 50% Silk, 438 yds / 400 m per 100g) in the colourway Secret Garden.

Sample #2 yarn (blue) - Treehouse Knits Yak Silk DK (60% SW Merino, 20% Silk, 20% Yak, 231 yds / 211 m per 100g) in the colourway The River Anduin.

A great commercial alternative is Knitpicks Swish DK!

Yardage Required:

Estimated yardage:
360(380, 405, 440)(465, 485, 535)(565, 595, 640)(665, 705, 735)(800, 820, 855)(935, 975, 1015, 1060)
Additional yardage per inch of body:
21(22, 24, 26)(27, 29, 31)(32, 35, 36)(38, 40, 41)(43, 45, 46)(48, 50, 51, 53)

Estimated meters:
330(347, 370, 402)(425, 443, 490)(517, 544, 585)(608, 645, 672)(732, 750, 782)(855, 892, 928, 969)
Additional meters per inch of body:
19(20, 22, 24)(25, 27, 28)(29, 32, 33)(35, 37, 37)(39, 41, 42)(44, 46, 47, 48)

Note: Yardage is an approximation and is calculated using the recommended measurements (see schematics in photos), plus approximately 5% extra. Allow for extra yardage if choosing to add length or if you have a significant difference in your actual full bust compared to the estimated full bust. Yardage can vary depending on your gauge and knitting, so I always recommend buying extra in case you require more yardage.
