Size: This garment fits best if it is custom length. Have the person who will wear the shrug stand with her arm slightly bent in front of her chest. A second person should measure from wrist bone to the bone at the base of the neck (center back). Multiply this measurement by 2. You will knit the shrug about 2” less than the sum and block it 2” longer. For example, my wrist to center back measurement was 30”. (2x30=60) I knit my shrug 58” long and blocked it to 62”. the width is 27”.

Yarn: Schoolhouse Press Laceweight Icelandic (1¾oz/50g; 250yds/228m; wool) 6 balls Light Gray #1026

Needles:

  • Size 6 (4mm) needles or size to obtain gauge
  • Size 1 (2.25mm) needles

Blocked Gauge: 5.5 sts to 1”/2.5cm in Body chart pat using size 6 (4mm) needles

Construction Notes: “The shrug is knit with built-in I-Cord on each edge. The first and last 3 sts of every row are the I-Cord sts, worked at row beginnings by knitting and at row endings by slipping purlwise with yarn in front. Since they are knit only every other row, do not knit these sts too tightly or they will ‘pull in’ the edge. If this is happening, you can add an extra I-Cord row occasionally as follows: k the first 3 sts, slip them back onto the left-hand needle and knit them again; continue row.”
