The mittens are worked from the bottom up in the round using a long circular needle and the magic loop method of working a small circumference. Substitute DPN or whichever method of knitting small circumference you prefer. You will need a set of needles to achieve gauge and a set 2 sizes smaller for the ribbed cuffs.

The allover pattern is created with mosaic knitting, the stitch pattern is charted. If you are new to working mosaic knitting or to knitting from charts the Pressed Flowers Kerchief is a free pattern that has both written and charted directions.

These mittens will fit an average adult medium hand. Because of the large pattern repeat the most effective way to adjust the size these mittens is to change gauge. For smaller hands use a lighter yarn: fingering, heavy sock or jumper weight. For larger hands consider using a DK weight yarn and going up a needle size (or two). A gauge of 30 stitches and 60 rows over 4” will give an 8 ½”/ 21.5 cm (unstretched) circumference or 26 stitches and 52 rows over 4” an 10”/ 25 cm (unstretched) circumference. Wool and wool blend yarns are recommended for this pattern. The mittens shown are knit with Lichen and Lace Rustic Heather sport, a hand-dyed single ply Canadian Wool.

To make fingerless mitts, follow the instructions as written through chart round 48, then break the CC, change to smaller needles and work 1x1 rib as for the cuff to desired length. For the thumbs pick up the stitches as written then with smaller needles and MC, work 1x1 rib to desired length.
