The Moria Sweater is a bulky weight sweater with textured panels inspired by the architecture from the Mines of Moria in Lord of the Rings. It has a crew style neckline with a picked up collar, and is worked top down (flat for the armhole shaping, then in the round for the remainder of the body and sleeves) with a sloped drop shoulder construction. The yoke section is worked at a smaller stitch count than the full bust, and has some increases at the bottom, and some underarm cast-on stitches to increase to the full bust measurement. The sleeves have a small amount of short row shaping at the top before working in the round. The collar, cuffs and bottom edge have a 1 x 1 ribbed hem. The sweater is designed to fall to a high hip level. The pattern is intended to be a boxy fit, but has options for a small amount of waist shaping if desired, as well as adjusting length as needed for the body and sleeves. This is a size inclusive design, written for 11 sizes (32-72 inch / 80-180 cm finished bust, in 4 inch / 10 cm increments) and designed for 4-8 inches / 10-20 cm of positive ease.

Note: Due to the texture panels and construction, I would consider this an intermediate level pattern. It can definitely be knit by a beginner, but will be a more complex project then a basic stockinette sweater and will be harder to modify.

Note: The sizes reflect the FINISHED bust measurements in inches / cm of the sweater, and listed below you can see the recommended actual bust range for each size. The sweater is designed for 4-8 inches / 10-20 cm of positive ease. To determine the size you wish to knit, measure your bust and add 4-8 inches / 10-20 cm to find the closest size. If you are in between sizes, size down for a snugger fit, or up for a looser fit. My sample is knit with 7 inches / 17.5 cm of positive ease (Size 4 on a 37 inch / 90 cm bust and 30 inch / 75 cm waist).

Note: Due to the texture panels in this design, it is a bit harder to modify without doing some adjustments to the written instructions, especially for armhole/yoke depth. I recommend choosing a size that will work the best for those measurements.

Needles recommended:
6.5 mm / US 10.5 / UK 3 (or size needed to obtain gauge) - main body
6 mm / US 10 / UK 4 (or size needed to obtain gauge) - ribbing
Cord length to match your bust measurement as well as 9-16 inch / 22.5-40 cm cord for the sleeves (or DPNs or 32-40 inch / 80-100 cm cord for the magic loop method).

I recommend swatching both in the round and flat, as parts of the sweater are knit flat before joining in the round. If your flat gauge is significantly different than your round gauge, you can adjust needle size for the flat portion.

One colour of any Bulky weight yarn to match gauge.
My sample is knit using Pasley Knits - Woolpaca Bulky (60% Superwash Merino wool, 40% Baby Alpaca, 109 yds / 100 m per 100g) in the colourway Gandalf.

Yardage required:
The yardage estimates provided are based on the recommended lengths for body and sleeves as listed in the schematics, and I have listed which texture panel the body/sleeves end on if you follow the pattern as written. The sleeves are intended to be on the longer side for the oversized fit of this sweater, but you can adjust as needed for your arm length. For some sizes, the sleeves have partial texture panels for the last section of the sleeves before the cuff. The Diamonds panel is approx. 1.5 inches / 4 cm in length, and the Broken Rib/Arches panels are approx. 2.75 inches / 7 cm in length, so if you want to add an additional full panel you’d need to account for that additional length. You could also add some additional length in the hem/cuff ribbing if you don’t wish to add a full panel.
