I remember the times in Finland when I lived by a lake. The first morning of every spring when I woke up, opened the window and heard the gulls screaming, it filled my heart with joy as I knew the spring was coming. In Italy, the seagulls are large and luminous, their cries echoing above the sea all year long. In winter, when the wind whips and the air turns misty with sea spray, they open their wide wings and ride the gusts with ease. The design of these socks recalls that moment, the gentle rhythm of wings, the grace of the gabbiani in flight.

Gabbiani socks are worked toe up with a Fleegle heel. The Gabbiani pattern covers the instep and the front leg. German short rows are used to create the heel turn. Tubular bind off finishes the cuff. The instructions are written for the Magic Loop method.

Quince & co Starling (75 % superwash Merino, 25 % recycled polyamide, 200 m / 50 g).
2 (2, 2) 3 skeins or 235 (320, 380) 470 m / 260 (350, 415) 515 yds of fingering weight yarn.

Gauge
33 sts x 48 rnds = 10 cm /4” with 2.25 mm (US 1) needles in stockinette st after blocking.

2.25 mm (US 1) – 100 cm / 40” circular needles, or as required to obtain gauge.
