FOSS for WOMEN
2 x lengths: Full and Cropped
2 X neck finishes - Boat Neck and Mock Turtle Neck
Foss is the Icelandic word for Waterfall. Ever since I created my Foss infinity scarf after visiting Iceland, I’ve wanted to create a sweater of similar design. The random ribs were inspired by a tracing I made over a photo of the Seljalandfoss waterfall. It is one of the most beautiful, serene waterfalls in Iceland. Please read my little blog Icelandic Foss about the inspiration behind this and the Foss for Men sweater.
This oversized, bottom up, in the round sweater that begins with a 3x1 ribbed hem, followed with the random rib pattern, makes for a very flattering, easy to wear pullover. There are two length options – full or slightly cropped. It is divided into two halves for the arm holes, where the back and fronts are worked separately in the flat. There are a few short rows worked for shoulder shaping and then finished in a 3x1 rib boat neck or a mock turtle neck. The arms echo a smaller random ribbing detail.
This sweater is knit using the brilliantly structured yarn Einrúm E+2 (80% Icelandic Wool + 20% Thai Silk).
SIZES:
1 (2, 3, 4) 5, 6, 7
Finished bust circumference:

37.75 (40, 44, 48) 52.5, 56, 60.75“
Suggested fit approx. 10 – 20cm (4 - 8”) positive ease.
Silver sample shown in size 4 with 18cm (7”) of ease.
Blue cropped sample shown in size 3 with 7.5 cm (3”) of ease.
Finished garment measurements are taken with relaxed fabric after blocking, so please knit a gauge swatch.
TIPS FOR SIZES AND MEASURING BUST: Which size?
I find the best way measure your bust is to take a measuring tape and measure over your bra and around the back shoulder blades, at widest point. Don’t pull the tape tight. This is your bust circumference measurement, not bra size.
Choose your size based on your own bust measurement. For example, if your bust measures 104cm (41”) (at widest point) and you want 18cm (7”) of inches of looseness (positive ease), then knit size 4.
YARN:
Einrúm, E+2, 50g (208m/ 227yds; 80% Icelandic wool/ 20% Thai Silk; Fingering weight).

Cropped sample shown in colour 1014.
Note: For yarn substitution I recommend that you do not use a superwash yarn, as you may not get the stitch definition and structure for the all over random ribbing.

TOOLS:
Needles
-
Size 3.5mm/US 4 circular needle, 80cm / 32” length (or size needed to obtain gauge) to knit the garment, and sleeves. If not using magic loop for sleeves, then a set of double pointed needles will be required.
-
Additional 60 - 80cm / 24 – 32” circular needle for placing sts on hold and for the 3-needle bind off.
-
A spare gauge size DPN, or 0.25mm (1 US size) larger than gauge size needle depending on how tight your bind off is. If you tend to be tight, then opt for the larger needle to complete the 3-needle bind off. Stitch markers: 1 unique for EOR, 1 removable, and up to 6 additional for pattern repeats. Tapestry/Darning needle Row counter is recommended (optional)
