Baby carriers are known in nearly all Asian cultures and with this pattern, you can knit your own. Chinese carriers have a square or oblong body with a long strap extending from each corner and may be worn either in front or in back. Traditionally, the center square is 15 to 16 inches (38.1 to 40.6 cm) across. (Interweave)

Needles, 5 double pointed, size 3 (3.25 mm) or size needed to obtain gauge, and 4 sets of circular, size 3 (3.25 mm), 16 inches (40.6 cm), 24 inches (61.0 cm), 32 inches (81.3 cm), and 40 inches (101.6 cm)

Gauge:
28 sts and 28 rnds = 4 inches (10.2 cm) in charted patt; straps, 34 sts and 28 rows = 4 inches (10.2 cm) in k1, p1 rib (strap row gauge is the crucial measurement)
This is a knitted baby carrier (mei tai). It is a back carrier that does not provide head support (best for older infants/toddlers). It consists of a knitted square panel with four front-fastening ties.
