BALEINE

Baleine is the French word for whale. The blue whale, a species in the parvorder of Baleen whales, is the largest animal to have ever existed. Funny enough, it feeds mostly on krill, which is a very small animal. It just eats (literal) tons of it.
Pub quiz knowledge aside, the thumb gusset section of these mittens was inspired by the throat pleats and the baleen plates that you can see on whales. I just love how streamlined and sleek they look.
The yarn, Quince & Co.’s Chickadee Organic Heathers, works perfectly with the pattern. Of course you can use any sport weight yarn that gives you the right gauge, but I recommend a yarn with lots of elasticity and spring to it. This way, the mittens will fit nicely around your wrist and still allow for movement in the hand.

The twisted ribbing is very stretchy. My palm is 18 cm (7 in) around and I wear size Small very comfortably.

Gauge and Needles
38 sts x 36 rows = 10 x 10 cm (4 x 4 in) in twisted ribbing (k1tbl, p1) worked in the round, unstretched, after washing

3.00 mm (US 2 1/2) or size to obtain gauge
