Here’s a pattern that I wrote up as a way for my students to practice Continental Knitting. It starts with a few rows of garter stitch, then moves on to incorporate purling, yarn overs, and simple decreases in a lace chevron motif.

This pattern is a very simple garter ridge cowl with stripes. It’s perfect to get an appealing contrast between two different weights of single-ply yarns. The bulky weight is held on its own, and the worsted weight is held double.
