Yggdrasil
Colder weather is imminent and I for one need to get my hands cosy whilst still being able to use my fingers for typing and knitting and whatnot. So, I whipped up this fingerless mitt pattern, using a traditional Norwegian thumb gusset, and borrowing some old Norwegian pattern repeats for the palm. The back side of the hand depicts a tree that gave me associations to the Tree of Life – Yggdrasil – in Norse Mythology

Yarn
Jamieson’s Shetland Spindrift (100% Shetland wool, 105 m / 115 yds, 25 g).
Rauma Finull PT2 (100% Norwegian wool, 175 m / 191 yds, 50 g).
mc: 90-115 m / 98-126 yds
cc1: 50-85 m / 55-93 yds
cc2: 4-8 m / 5-9 yds
You will get the best results if you use a fingerint to sport weight, non-superwash, woollen spun sheep’s wool yarn. Alternatives: Jamieson & Smith’s 2 ply jumper weight, Navia Duo, Hillesvåg Ask, Tukuwool Fingering, Holst Supersoft, etc..
Needles
Gauge-size needles and 0.5 mm below gauge-size needles for working small circumferences in the round.
The sample was made using 3 mm (US 2 ½) and 2.5 mm (US 1 ½) mm needles.
Gauge
(34, 32, 30, 28) sts = 10 cm / 4” in stranded colourwork.
Sizes
(1, 2, 3, 4)
The sample is knit in size 3 and worn with 2.5 cm / 1” ease around the knuckles.
Mitten circumference (19, 20, 21, 23) cm / (7.5, 7.75, 8.5, 9)”.
Different sizes are achieved with different gauges by using bigger needles for bigger sizes and smaller needles for smaller sizes.
