These scarves are long and skinny, and from a distance look ordinary, but they are mysterious to anyone who looks at them closely. The pattern is a byproduct of a cowl pattern that was inspired by a diagram in a textbook. Mathematically, they are made by extruding a to a sort of three-finned thing. …By the way, the pattern name is pronounced “Y cross I skinny scarves.”

The only stitches used are knit and purl; instructions are given for the unusual cast-on.

Special materials needed:
One thin (≈ 3mm/≈ US sz 2) circular needle, at least 29” / 74cm in length, tip to tip (for casting on only).
Three US size 7 / 4.5mm circular needles, the shortest of which is at least 29” / 74cm in length.
Two small thick rubber bands; the ones that come on stalks of broccoli work well. These are for securing the ends of needles not currently in use.
