Woven Cowl
This cowl is packed with texture and interest so there’s hardly a dull moment as you create a squishy cosy fabric utilizing both the Right and Wrong side produced with bands of Linen stitch, as well as twisted stitches, bobbles, cables and garter stripes, creating an almost olden world woven look, from another era but also timeless in its snuggly promise. It is a fairly close-fitting cowl that you knit as a single layer for something a bit lighter or a double layer version, offering a more substantial cosy option. A provisional cast on is used at the start for that version and then opened once all the patterning part is worked leaving only stockinette fabric to be worked up to match the length of the patterned half you have already worked, to be joined by using a 3rd needle like a kind of halfway 3 needle bind off. Both versions are then finished off with a picot bind off edging.
Knitting skills & techniques used:
Intermediate - Advanced: Casting on/provisional cast on using crochet hook method and waste yarn, binding off (with picot option), knitting & purling in the round, slipping stitches purlwise, passing stitches over, & bobbles. It involves joining 2 parallel needles worth of sts into a single row of stitches to join the 2 layers for the double layer version.
Materials:
The following yarn usage amount is an approximate guide and is in fact a little over the actual amount I used, as I have applied an approx. 10% buffer of each ball used, plus rounded up the numbers, in view of differences between knitter’s gauge and such, and to give you a few grams room:
Requires approx. 382 yards / 349 metres DK weight yarn.
For the Sample I used: Emiteri Yarns, Merino DK, ‘War of the Roses set’
(100% Wool - Merino, 100g, 246 yards / 225 meters) in the middle colourway from the 3 skein set, but any wool based DK Weight yarn of choice should work fine.
Needles: 5mm / US 8 Circular needle (40cm) x3 or x2 or x1 + a pair with much longer cord to act as a third needle
Notions: 9 stitch markers & 1 unique BOR marker.
Tapestry needle / crochet hook to weave in ends. Waste yarn and crochet hook for provisional cast on.
Gauge: 4” (10 cm) on 5 mm / US 8 needles (after blocking) 18 sts & 40 rounds in Garter stitch
Incorrect Gauge can affect finished measurements / yarn usage.
Finished measurements:
Circumference: 20” / 53cm Laying Flat: 10” / 26cm Depth: 9” / 23cm
