Winter Afternoon sweater
‘Winter Afternoon’ is a hip-length sweater with
seamless construction and anatomic fit, incl.
• Raised back-neck;
• Waist & hip shaping (optional; size 8-9 yrs+)
• Bust darts (size M+)
You start with the circular yoke Knit the body top-down in the round in garter stitch (using short-rows) Then raise the back for a better fit and separate for the body & sleeves. Basic instructions assume straight body, but there is additional guidance on A-line shaping/ tailored fit. In addition, adult sizes №3-14 have instructions for horizontal bust darts (optional, but highly recommended for better fit).
The hem and cuffs are decorated with panels of ‘Waves’
YARN: fingering weight ~380-400m/420-437yds per 100g/3.5oz yarn, preferably with high wool content, in two contrast colors. See the table below for the required yardage.
The sample was knit in Symfonie Yarns Terra 75% Superwash merino and 25% nylon, colorways Valentine (main color) & Café Rose (contrast color)
• NEEDLES:
o Main (for the body & sleeves): 3 mm/US 2.5 (or size to get gauge) circulars on a 60 cm/24” cable;
o Edging (for the hem, cuffs, button bands and applied I-cord): 2.75mm/US 2 circulars on a 60 cm/24” cable + DPN’s;
• NOTIONS: crochet hook, stitch markers, row counter, tapestry needle, scissors.
Gauge (on main needles measured per 10x10 cm/4x4” square after wet blocking)
• In GARTER STITCH – 24 stitches by 23 garter ridges (46 rows)
• In STOCKINETTE – 24 stitches by 34 rows
• 5 children sizes: 3-4 (5, 6-7, 8-9, 10-12) yrs (see corresponding bust & height below)
• 10 adult sizes: XS-6XL, or 82-127cm/32-50” bust for an average height of 168 cm/5’6”.
