WIND SOCKS
………………….

This third instalment in the Simply Stranded Summer Sock Club was inspired, quite literally, by the neon-orange wind sock which flutters majestically over a nearby rural airfield.

The concept of a wind sock was new to me until I encountered the world of recreational aviation. And immediately it triggered a childhood memory: an art class in pre-school, where the teacher assigned us to ‘draw the wind.’

Naturally, each child approached this task with individual creativity. Some drew a sort of mist wafting across the sky. Others drew the trees with branches leaning over. And I, aged around five, drew a fluttering flag.

Playful, rhythmic, and delightfully literal, the Wind Socks are an ode to all this. Knit them in two colours, three colours, or five - for an endless confetti of fluttery colour-bursts, to mark life’s serendipitous moments.

Like all patterns in the Simply Stranded Summer Sock Club, the Wind Socks feature the following:

. instructions for knitting the socks cuff down and toe-up

. options for two types of heel construction:
peasant heel and short row heel

. colourwork charts based on a simple 4-stitch repeat that is top-down reversible, and can be worked either for the entire sock or just for the leg

. an extensive appendix with adjustment and modification options

. a short narrative about the inspiration behind the pattern
