The coaster uses size 10 crochet thread and the 2 steel hook sizes. The hot pad uses the 2 larger threads/yarns and the 2 larger hook sizes. The pattern is the same for the coaster and the hot pad, but by using different materials, you can make the coaster size or the hot pad size (or both).
