We work hard here at Wicked Chickens Yarn to practice an attitude of gratitude every day, so Thanksgiving is a favorite holiday for us! We felt that there is significantly too few Thanksgiving-themed knitting projects out there, and we want to remedy that with a knitted pocket Thanksgiving Turkey! So here he is (we call the little one Tom and the bigger one Ted). We hope you agree there need to be way more knitted turkeys in the world!

These grateful little turkeys are perfect to give as gifts, or to use for decorating your house. Think of how cute it would be if each of your guests had a turkey holding their name on their plate at your Thanksgiving table! Plus this is a quick and fun knit and you will find yourself making a whole house full of little knitted turkey friends! You can also use the pattern to make multiple sizes of turkey depending on what weight yarn you use, as illustrated in the last photo. We know, you didn’t think this pattern could get any better, but it totally did once you found out you could knit all kinds of sizes of turkeys. Skill Level: Intermediate as determined by the Craft Yarn Council. We would recommend this pattern for beginning knitters that are comfortable knitting in the round or who want a bit of a challenge. We have rated it “intermediate” because according to the Craft Council skill level guidelines, anything knitted in the round is intermediate.

Skills used: Basic knit and purl stitches, increases, decreases, knitting in the round, picking up stitches, Magic Loop Method for knitting in the round, and basic sewing skills.

Pattern Format: Instant download Adobe .pdf file

Yarn:
35-60 yards of brown yarn for body
15-40 yards of orange yarn for beak and legs
20-45 yards of burgundy yarn for tail
25-50 yards of cream yarn for tail
The heavier the yarn weight, the more yardage needed.

This pattern is written round by round so that you can use any weight yarn you want to create all sorts of sizes of magical friends. Try sock yarn for pocket size turkeys, or bulky yarn for a large buddy perfect for the centerpiece at your Thanksgiving dinner.

Gauge: You pick! Simply knit with your choice of yarn on needles 2-3 sizes smaller than called for to get a tight knit fabric your stuffing won’t show through.

Needles: You pick! A 40” or longer circular needle (for Magic Loop Method) in a size right for your yarn.

Notions: Scissors, tapestry needle, beginning of the round stitch marker (removable or closed), optional row counter, 12 removable stitch markers, stuffing, and a set of safety eyes (or other eye choice such as buttons or scrap yarn for embroidery).

Finished size: Your finished size will depend on what weight yarn you use. The sock weight yarn samples measure about 3.5” tall with 6mm safety eyes. The worsted weight sample measure approximately 5.5” tall with 9mm safety eyes.
