Weldon's Ridgeway
This stitch pattern from ca. 1891 Weldon’s Practical Needlework, vol. 4, p.5, was used for a pullover called a “Jersey Jacket”. I personally would leave this great texture unblocked: the stable, cushy knitted fabric would make a great scarf or blanket. The 2 sides are identical. Blocked for a garment, the long vertical columns would be slimming.
Although the pattern is normally a rib stitch, I wouldn’t use it as ribbing; it’s not springy enough. Also, if using this pattern unblocked, work a tight bind off; otherwise, the bound-off edge will splay.
There’s only one pattern row with a multiple of 4 stitches + 1 stitch. An odd number of stitches is essential.
Skills needed: cast on, knit, purl and bind off.
Gauge is not important in this pattern. Any block-able yarn/thread will work. Make a swatch to check gauge and appearance.
55 yards of LB Collection Cotton Jeans yarn will make 10 inches of a 29-stitch-wide strip at gauge.
