Veter Shawl
20% of this pattern sales will be donated to ACT-SO, a division of NAACP designed to recruit, stimulate, and encourage high academic and cultural achievement among African-American high school students. Coming from a family of teachers, I especially value such programs and believe in their empowering abilities.
”Veter” is a sonic interpretation of a Slavic word for wind, which playfulness and strength were the inspiration behind this design. These days, this shawl’s name has got a new, deeper meaning - it is an expression of the Wind of Change all of us can feel.
The shawl is completed in a V-shape which is easy to knit and very comfortable to wear. Light weight and generous size make Veter a lovely addition to warmer weather wardrobes.
Full of air and light as a feather, this shawl looks like some of its rows were knit with the strands of gentle breeze. The pattern was designed to highlight the beauty of combining kid mohair with fingering weight yarn. Alternating stripe patterns keep you entertained and are very satisfying to knit. You can increase/decrease the length of a shawl by repeating/skipping some of these stripes to use up all the yarn from a skein without any leftovers.
What kind of Veter will fly off your needles? ♡
Size:
- Wingspan 87” / 220cm + tassels
- Depth 28” / 71cm
- Depending on the gauge and available yardage, your project may differ in size
Yarn:
- Color A: 450-500yds / 410-455m of fingering weight yarn
- Color B: 450-500yds / 410-455m of lace weight mohair yarn
- Any combination of mohair + fingering or fingering + fingering yarn will work fine. The pattern is easy to modify for another yarn weight and yardage as well
- Sample shawl: Color A - Cheshire Cat from Wonderland Yarns (100% superwash merino, 4oz / 115g, 512yds / 468m) in color Tea Tray Color B - Pegasus from Dragon Hoard Yarn (70% kid mohair, 30% silk, 1.75oz / 50g, 459yds / 419m) in color Seafoam Mermaid
Needles and Gauge:
- 18 sts and 37 rows in 4” / 10cm in Garter Stitch, blocked
- US 8 / 5mm needles or the size needed to obtain gauge
- For any other yarn: use needles at least three sizes up from stated on the label to keep fabric airy and light
Construction:
- The shawl is knit in a shape of a modified triangle with a V-line at the top of the item.
- Garter stitch works like a canvas for an interesting lace pattern. It’s worked on just 4 rows and is easy to memorize. Video tutorial is provided.
- Neither yarn weight nor gauge is critical for this project, and the number of section repeats can be adjusted as well depending on the available yardage and the desired size of the finished shawl. This way, you can use all the yarn from a skein without leftovers and waste.
- If you’d like to get size and drape similar to a sample, make sure to check your gauge specifically on a blocked swatch.
- Tassels can be added for an extra touch of boho and to make corners look more polished.
