UnderFoot socks can be worn as liner socks under a heavier layer for deep winter activities or on their own for light insulation. Made in a yak blend, these hard-wearing socks can be warmer than wool. UnderFoot are constructed top-down, and feature a “princess sole” and heel flap so that the softer knit side of the fabric touches the parts of the foot that are apt to be most tender or subject to friction.

UnderFoot is part of The UnderWhere Collection - accessories for cold weather performance and protection, worked in deeply insulating fibres with next-to-skin softness.

Finished size: 7.5 (8, 8.5, 9, 9.5, 10, 10.5) in/19 (20.5, 21.5, 23, 24, 25.5, 26.5) cm diameter. Foot length is based on 9 (9.5, 10, 10.5, 11, 11.5, 12.5) in/23 (24, 25.5, 26.5, 28, 29, 31.5) cm and may be customized in pattern. Leg length 7 in/18 cm all sizes. Note that longer lengths will require additional yarn than specified.

Yarn: Choose a fingering weight yarn with a tight twist that is soft for next-to-skin wear and is well- insulating.

Yarn Requirements: 245 (292, 340, 357, 394, 452, 510) y/224 (267, 311, 326, 360, 413, 466) m

As the socks feature a “princess sole” - one where the softer knit stitches are on the inside meaning the sole is worked in reverse stockinette - the pattern takes steps to remind the knitter when they are working the opposite of what regular sock knitters expect.

The creation of these socks was prompted by two needs: the designer, who has a circulatory system impairment that means their fingers and toes need extra insulation, and their partner who commutes by bicycle all year round in a place that has at least five months of winter. They’re not ground-breaking, just very functional for both of those folks.
