Tree of Life (Yggdrasil )
Yggdrasil – Tree of Life Shawl
Pronounced yɡːˌdrasilː it is an immense mythical tree that connects the nine worlds in Norse cosmology and considered very holy. The Norse gods go to Yggdrasil daily to assemble. The branches of Yggdrasil extend far into the heavens, and the tree is supported by three roots that extend far away into other locations; one to the well called Urðarbrunnr in the heavens, one to the spring Hvergelmir, and another to the well called Mímisbrunnr. Creatures live within Yggdrasil, including the wyrm (dragon) Níðhöggr, an unnamed eagle, and the stags Dáinn, Dvalinn, Duneyrr and Duraþrór.
This heavily influenced the design of the shawl, with three panels for the 3 roots as well as the stylised tree of life cabled panel on the centre back.
The yardage on this design is quite tight, so it is important to get the correct gauge. However, as the pattern is knitted from the bottom up, and finished with a semicircular collar, you can bind off a few rows earlier than indicated if you are running short of yarn, or prefer a deeper neckline.

The chart is missing a symbol for ptbl. There is only one in the pattern on row 3.
