Take a trip under the sea with the Mermaids’ Garden shawl!

The Mermaids’ Garden is an asymmetrical (bias) triangle shawl - some people call this shape “boomerang.” The shawl has a variety of stitch designs including textured and openwork patterns. The stitch patterns have short repeats that are easy to catch onto, and each one is fully explained in the instructions. And you get to learn the Sea Urchin stitch! This beautiful stitch is also fun to work, and there’s a video tutorial to show you how.

This shawl is a sequel to the Catching a Mermaid Shawl and Gift of the Mermaid shawls. You don’t have to have made those to enjoy this one, though!

Finished dimensions
The long edge of the shawl is approximately 76” / 190 cm, with the widest point approximately 28”/ 70 cm deep.

Yarn
Approximately 150 grams/650 yards/600 meters fingering/sock-weight yarn for the standard size shawl; the smaller and larger versions will have different yarn requirements. The yarn used for the sample was Wild Violet Fibers Silky Sock in “Gemini.” This yarn is 75% extra fine superwash merino wool/25% mulberry silk. Other wool or wool blend yarn would also work well for this pattern.

Skills to have (or enjoy learning) for this shawl
Knit, purl, k2tog/ p2tog, ssk, kfb/pfb, yo. The stitch patterns are clearly explained, with row-by-row instructions, charts, stitch counts any time there is a change, and close-up photos of every stitch pattern.
