The Dead Marshes
The hobbits soon found that what had looked like one vast fen was really an endless network of pools and soft mires and winding half-strangled water-courses. Among these, a cunning eye and foot could thread a wandering path.
J.R.R. Tolkien “The Passage of the Marshes”
The design for this one should be pretty self-explanatory. I wanted it to mirror the different landscapes of the marshes and include a “wandering path” down the foot. It looks great in a solid color, but as you can see, it shows off variegation pretty well, too!
Skill Level: Basic-to-Intermediate, while there aren’t really any very complicated stitches involved in this sock, there’s a chart and sock construction to be considered.
Materials: approx. 340-380 yds / 310-350 m of sock yarn. The socks pictured used Barking Dog Achilles in the (wonderfully named) colorway “Swamp”
Needles: US1 (2.25mm) sock needles. The pattern is written for DPNs but magic loop knitters can follow using stitch markers.
Tools: Tape measure, scissors, and tapestry needle
Sizing: Small (Large) sizes measure 8(9) inches / 20(22.5) cm in circumference. Leg height, ankle depth, and foot length are all adjustable to fit and preference.
Gauge: 8 stitches and 12 rounds per inch / 2.5cm in stockinette stitch.
