“For this design I was inspired by the idea of a crisp walk through an autumnal forest and returning to the cabin for a cup of hot cocoa. I wanted to design a shawl that would be perfect for both experiences.

The rustic feel of natural wool combined with the texture of the garter stitch and mosaic knitting gave me that cosy feeling I was looking for. The mosaic motif reminds me of undergrowth in a forest, which was perfect combined with the green shades of the sample.”

Tesserae is a large triangle shawl. It begins with a garter tab at the top of the centre spine and is worked top-down, flat. Shaping is achieved with increases along the sides and centre spine. The shawl is worked with two colours and combines garter stitch and mosaic knitting; only one colour is used at a time.

NEEDLES
3.75 mm / US 5 circular needle with a cable length of at least 100 cm / 40” (or needle size to obtain gauge)

This pattern uses the magic loop technique for its cast-on, which requires using a long circular needle.

GAUGE
22 sts x 40 rows = 10 x 10 cm / 4 x 4” (worked flat, in garter stitch, after blocking)
