The Symbister House Mitts were designed as part of a set. The set was inspired by the architecture of Symbister House. Symbister House looks out over the harbour of Symbister, the main settlement of the island of Whalsay, Shetland. It was built by the Sixth Robert Bruce of Symbister, Laird of Whalsay, in 1823. It is a magnificent Georgian mansion. The main motif of the hat and mitt set was taken from one of the outbuildings, a “high-rise” three-seater toilet known as the Laird’s Toilet.

S (L) to fit hand circumference 18 to 19 (20 to 21) cm/ 7.25 to 7.75 (7.75 to 8.25) inches, designed to be worn with no or slight positive ease for a snug but not constricting fit. Shown in size S.

About the yarn:
Foula wool yarn is spun from 100% Foula sheep wool from the extremely remote Shetland island of Foula. Foula sheep are a traditional strain of Shetland sheep and the yarn comes in 7 entirely natural sheep colours.

Needles:
3.75 mm double pointed needles, or size required to match tension.
3.5 mm double pointed needles, or one size smaller than needle required to match tension.

Tension:
22 sts and 24 rows to 10 cm/4 inches using larger needles, measured over stranded colourwork pattern after blocking.

Notions:
Stitch marker to mark beginning of round
1 – 2 stitch markers to mark thumb gusset
Small amount of smooth waste yarn to hold thumb stitches
Tapestry needle for weaving in ends.
