Stripe Me Up
The third in my series of stripes with a difference sock patterns.
Vertical double stripes up the length of these socks and also on the back of the leg give these stylish socks overall colour without stranding and twisting yarns, thus maintaining their stretchiness for a good fit.
Be warned - these socks are not for the faint-hearted (or possibly cat owners). Each double stripe is worked with a separate strand of yarn, and these are quite long at the start! Tips are included to help keep the strands untangled.
The pattern itself is very simple - the difficulty is in managing your strands and getting a consistent tension for your stripes, which are naturally knit tighter than the rest of the sock. The gauge above is for a vanilla sock in your main colour - the gauge over the stripes is 34 stitches/4 inches.
The heel is worked as no-wrap short rows.
The pattern is written for one at a time toe-up magic loop, which is easiest for handling the strands as they are shorter when you get to the leg, but includes notes on working cuff down. The socks are not suited to knitting two-at-a-time - even the most hardened taat testers agreed…
In addition to the main colour you will need 50-62 yards of contrast colours for the stripes.
