This design is the fourth of a series—twelve explorations of different knit-purl stitch patterns throughout 2025. Sometimes called “Tiles,” I know this pattern better as “Swedish Blocks.” The blocks in this stitch pattern are more sophisticated than the small boxes in last month’s stitch pattern, so the cowl I designed with Swedish Blocks is more sophisticated in its construction than the Little Boxes’ simple tube. The pattern document includes general instructions for working Swedish Blocks flat and in the round, as well as specific instructions for a sample square, and a cowl. It also includes a few designer ideas to help inspire your own designs featuring the Swedish Blocks pattern.

The techniques you will need to know, or learn, to complete this project are:

  • cast on and bind-off;
  • knit and purl;
  • seaming a vertical edge to a horizontal edge with mattress stitch or other seaming method.
