This design is the last of a series—twelve explorations of different knit-purl stitch patterns throughout 2025. This broken welt stitch pattern might not be an old, traditional stitch pattern, but it is attractive, and one I’ve been wanting to use for quite a while. It’s not reversible, but the wrong side is not ugly, so don’t be afraid to use it for a scarf, or any other item where both sides might be seen at once. The pattern document includes general instructions for working the broken welt stitch pattern flat and in the round, as well as specific instructions for a sample square and a scarf worked lengthwise. You’ll also find a few designer ideas to help inspire your own designs featuring this broken welt stitch pattern.

This is an easy project. The techniques you will need to know, or learn, to complete this project are:

  • cast on and bind off;
  • knit and purl.
