Steel Magnolias
“Women rely on friends. That’s where we draw sustenance and find safety. We can count on our women friends when we need a good laugh or a good story.” - Cokie Roberts
This pattern can be found in issue six of Nomadic Knits, and is now available exclusively here.
This is a complex lace pattern meant for advanced and expert knitters. The knitter should be comfortable knitting from charts and be familiar with a provisional cast-on method. The construction is unconventional in that the leg is worked beginning at the ankle up to the cuff, then the ankle stitches are worked in the opposite direction to create the heel and foot.
See my associated LizzieKnitzz Blog post for instructions on blocking the cuffs.
Sizes: Women’s S/ M (L); 7 (7.75)”/ 17.5 (19.5)cm foot circumference.
Needles: US 1/ 2.25mm for size S/M or US 2/ 2.75mm for size L; or size to obtain gauge, in preferred sock needles.
Gauge: 38 (34) sts and 41 (39) rnds = 4”/ 10 cm over Stockinette stitch, lightly blocked but not stretched.
Yarn: fingering weight: 380 (400) yards/ 348 (366) meters.
Notions: stitch markers, tapestry needle, sock blockers, waste yarn in fingering and bulky.
Sample knit in: CatTails Yarn Himalayan (60% superwash Merino, 20% Alpaca, 20% nylon; 430 yards/ 100g) in White Ajah.
