I developed this afghan strip from the St. Gallen sweater in 1912 Fleisher’s Knitting and Crocheting Manual, p. 151. (The manual is 75% crocheting and only 25% knitting.) The C4F cable and knit/purl columns created a nice sweater texture of slimming vertical lines but the original pattern didn’t make sense. I used the sweater’s photo as a guide and, after 3 tries, made a workable pattern with 28 stitches across and 4 pattern rows. The strip is 3.75 inches wide at gauge but any gauge will work.

Skills needed: cast on, slip, knit, purl, C4F cable and bind off.

Gauge is not important in this pattern. Any block-able yarn/thread will work. Make a swatch to check gauge and appearance.

55 yards of Cascade Yarns’ ReFine will make 10 inches of a 28-stitch-wide strip at gauge.
