Soothe the soul is a sideways-knit triangular shawl designed specifically for variegated or self-striping yarn.
In fact, the shawl could very well be named “Regulating the unregulated” because it made sense of every yarn my testers threw at it, even those that they initially thought were “too” variegated!
There are also a few other reasons why it’s compelling!
• Simple texture and openwork combine in a very relaxing project. Shaping and lace patterning occur only on right side rows.
• It’s adjustable to size desired or amount of yarn available – great for stashbusting! Testers’ projects varied from 55” to 80” wide (measured along the top edge).
• It has a reversible fabric.
• Speedy knitting - this shawl will fly off your needles before you know it!
• Simple enough for lace beginners, yet still very engaging for experienced knitters.
• The pattern can be used for any yarn weight.
The pattern is both written and charted and includes instructions for adjusting shawl size and for using 2 colors if preferred.
Skill level: Advanced beginner.
Yarn: A variegated or self-striping yarn of any weight. Testers used DK, fingering and light fingering weights.
Yardage: At least 300 yds/274m in DK weight; at least 440 yds/402 m in fingering weight. You may use 2 colors if you like.
For the shawl shown in first photo, I used a self-striping DK weight: Vardhman Zig-Zag; 88% acrylic, 12% nylon; 292 yds/267m/100g. in colors #19 (A) and #11 (B). Actual usage: A 137 yds/126m; B 129 yds/118m.
Needles & notions: 4mm (US 6) (for DK weight) 32” circular needles; stitch markers, tapestry needle, weighing scale
Gauge: DK weight: 18 sts/28 rows = 4” (10 cm) in stockinette stitch; one patt rep (16 sts x 32 rows, measured along the right edge) is approx. 4.5” (11.4 cm) wide and 6.5” (16.5 cm) tall, after blocking and relaxing
Finished size: Shawl shown in first photo: 56” (142 cm) along top edge, 20” (51 cm) height at center, 34” (86 cm) along each side, after blocking
Many thanks to my wonderful testers:
