Soldier Bricks Scarf
Soldier bricks are placed vertically with their narrow edge showing in brick walls. They’re also used in brick pathways to keep the horizontally-laid bricks from shifting out of position. I found this pattern in ca. 1891 Weldon’s Practical Needlework, vol. 4, p.9. Weldon used it for a gentleman’s sock but it also makes a handsome, reversible scarf.
There are 20 easy pattern rows of rib and stockinette stitch with a repeat of 4 stitches + 2 edge stitches. The first stitch of every row is slipped purl-wise to make a tidy edge.
Make your scarf as wide or narrow and as short or long as you need.
Skills needed: cast on, slip, knit, purl and bind off in rib stitch.
Gauge is not important in this pattern. Any block-able yarn/thread will work. Make a swatch to check gauge and appearance.
60 yards of Concept by Katia Cotton-Merino Tweed yarn will make 10” of a 30-stitch-wide scarf at gauge.
