This cosy cowl is inspired by the straw skeps traditionally used in beekeeping. Two colours combine some simple rib with an interesting lateral braid to create a stylish cowl.

CC- 30 (35) g DK weight yarn, 220 m per 100 g.
Sample shown in Home Farm Wensleydales DK; 100% wool; 210 m / 230 yds per 100 g; MC in Cotswold Stone, CC in Moreton Sage.
Needles: 4.0 mm / US 6 double pointed needles or 60 cm / 24” circular needle for working in the round on a medium circumference.
Notions: Stitch marker, 3.5 mm / E / 4 crochet hook (for closing braid, exact size not critical), tapestry needle.
Skills: Cast on, working in the round, knit, purl, lateral braid (instructions given), weaving in ends.
Gauge: 24 stitches and 26 rows over 10 cm / 4” in k1, p1 rib, unstretched after blocking. Gauge is not critical for this project, but different gauges will affect size and yarn requirements.
Sizing: Pattern gives stitch counts for small (large) size; approximately equivalent to 38 (50) cm / 15 (19¾)” knitted circumference with a depth of 14 cm / 5 ½”. This pattern is easy to resize- add stitches in multiples of two to achieve the size you desire.
