Shoulder Shawl in Syrian Pattern
Originally from Weldon’s Practical Knitter, Volume 6, Issue 62, 1891
Pattern Description from Victorian Lace Today: “The Crimean war of 1854 brought an Oriental influence in sympathy with Britain’s ally. Women began to sport rich Turkish-style fabrics and colors, and tasseled trims were popular. Foreign names were given to knitting patterns - this Syrian shawl, for example. The royal family’s intercontinental links also contributed to the thirst for far-off countries - Queen Victoria’s godfather was Tsar Nicholas I, her beloved Prince Albert was Prince of Saxe-Coburg, and her eldest daughter, Princess Victoria Adelaide Mary Louise, married Friedrich III, German Emperor and King of Prussia. This shawl is perfect for showing off a fluffy, textured, or painted yarn.”
