Sometimes knitting is about the sense of color, sometimes it’s about the sense of touch, and sometimes it’s about that certain sensation that comes when a pattern builds to something that is more than just the sum of its parts. Sensation was all of those things for me. This cowl combines my love of geometry and contrast, my love for the unbelieveably squishy soft yarn that Morehouse Farm Merino puts out year after year, and my obsession with patterns that are easy to memorize yet mezmerizing in their completed form.

Though it is worked flat in a straightforward slip-stitch garter pattern, a quick turn and seam at the end turns the simple-seeming rectangle into a generous, oversized bandana-shaped cowl that dips down to a central point in front, providing extra warmth under an open-necked coat and showing off its arresting geometric repeats. I hope you, like me, enjoy the sensation of knitting it just as much as the sensation of wearing it!
