This pattern was created out of necessity, as a way to use up all the little bits and pieces of yarn that I have collected over the years. After completing knitting projects, I would be left with half-balls of yarn, and scraps as small as one yard long. I couldn’t bring myself to throw these remnants away, but neither could I continue to let them collect in a bag in my closet. Therefore, the Scrapyard Scarf was created as a way to use up every last inch of my yarn.

This scarf is intended to be a stash-buster, so use whatever you have on hand. I made two versions of the scarf with different types of yarn. The first one used about 170 yds/154 m of a worsted weight wool yarn for the MC in-between rows, and a total of about 290 yds/ 266 m of sport weight wool yarn for the blocks. For the second scarf, I used worsted weight wool for all the MC in-between rows, but knit the blocks in yarn varying from lace weight to worsted weight in all different fibers. I think both versions look equally nice, so don’t be afraid to mix and match different types of yarn. You can really use up some very small scrappy bits and pieces of yarn, as the smallest blocks require only one yard each.
