Safe With Me
These mittens are part of an ebook - Join Hands. Until further notice, all proceeds from the collection will be sent to the LEAF Project for Universal Representation for Unaccompanied Children.
After the presidential executive order regarding bans and walls I wrote on the front window of my house. I took one of my children’s window markers and scrawled backwards (so passersby could read it), “You are safe with me.” Being close to Valentine’s Day, my five-year-old son tells people that this was for Valentine’s Day and it means that we love all people. He has half of it right: we love all people. And while I often forget to don my safety pin in the rush of getting out the door in the morning, I always remember my cold weather gear. In mid-winter, these safety pins will never get obscured by a jacket. They will be visible, always, telling all others that they will find no judgment, no hate here. You are safe with me. Always.
