Ruby Slippers
In the book The Wizard Of Oz, Dorothy’s magical slippers are silver. For the film version, Judy Garland’s slippers were changed to ruby in order to show off the expensive new Technicolor technology.
No one knows how many pairs of ruby slippers were originally made for the film, but five are known to have survived. One pair vanished while on loan, never to be seen again. The remaining four are in private collections and on display at the Smithsonian Institute. Their manufacture is attributed to the Western Costume Company of Hollywood and the original size 5½ shoes are reported to have cost about $15 a pair in 1938. Their value today is estimated at $3 million. Dorothy Gale was right, of course: There’s no place like home. Because that’s where your slippers are.
