There seems to be some confusion about the edge stitches. There is one stockinette edge stitch on each side and one center stitch that are worked for the first two charts. These stitches are not in the charts but are mentioned in the instructions, however briefly. The stitches are charted for the edging. I hope this helps.

Errata…for the beginning edge chart, the only knit stitch in row 25 should actually be a slip 2 knit1, psso double decrease. For the ending edge chart the second knit stitch should also be that same double decrease. Sorry for the issue.
