This simple but stunning cowl can be completed in a weekend with just one cake of yarn, making it a great project for gifts. Its modern simplicity will complement a wide range of personal styles. Make one for yourself and one for someone special!

Wear this elegant yet cozy cowl in a long single loop or wrapped double around the neck.

How This Cowl Is Made
The Moebius twist makes this design possible. A 180-degree twist is added to the foundation chain before the two ends are joined. This creates a continuous loop — each round will take you around the top and the bottom (essentially working two rounds in one!). Be sure to check out the video tutorial (link and QR code provided in pattern) to see how the setup round is worked.

When this technique is used with a gradient yarn with long color changes, the colors are mirrored on both sides. Another advantage of working both sides in each round is that you can easily modify the cowl’s width.

Pattern is written in US crochet terms.

Skill Level: Confident Beginner

Concentration Level
Little concentration required. Once the setup for the Moebius twist is complete, the rest of the project requires much less concentration. The straightforward stitching in the majority of the project means your hands can work on autopilot.

Stitches Used
Chain, single crochet, double crochet

Techniques Used
Joining ends of foundation chain to create a Moebius twist, working in the round, working in stitches and chain spaces.

Finished Measurements (approximate size after blocking)
42 inches (106.5 cm) in circumference x 8 inches (20 cm) wide

Super Fine (CYC #1) Weight Yarn
400–430 yds (366–393 m)

Each of the samples shown here was made with a F/5/3.75 mm and Freia Fine Handpaints Shawl Ball super fine (fingering) weight 100% wool (430 yds/393 m; 3.53 oz/100g):
lime green and gray cowl was made with the Lichen colorway;
burgundy and gray cowl was made with the Vintage colorway;
blue and green cowl was made with the Aurora colorway.
The project requires one cake of this yarn.

Circumference is adjustable by multiples of 6 stitches and width by working more or fewer 3-round repeats.
Be sure to buy additional yarn if you plan to increase the size of your cowl.

Suggested Yarn Substitutes
Sample was made with super-fine (fingering) weight wool, but feel free to substitute the fingering-weight yarn of your choice. Because results may vary, crocheting a gauge swatch with your alternative yarn is recommended. (Pattern includes instructions for gauge swatch.)

A different weight yarn may require a different size hook, as well as more or less yarn than noted. Working with a thinner or thicker yarn may result in different gauge measurements, which will affect the Finished Measurements.

Additional Tools and Materials
Size F/5/3.75 mm crochet hook or size needed to obtain gauge
Stitch marker
Tapestry needle
6 lace blocking wires (optional)
Blocking pins (optional)
Scissors

Gauge
Though exact gauge is not essential, for best appearance it should be close.
I used a F/5/3.75 mm crochet hook. Select the hook size that gives the best appearance for your choice of yarn and your tension.
A significantly different gauge may require more or less yarn than listed.
