Rebel Girl Shawl : a one-skein asymmetrical triangle shawl knit on the bias to create a lovely boomerang shape, knit using a combination of soothing eyelet ridges, stockinette and garter stitch.
I have developed this pattern to be used with Rebel Girl, a unique and distinct colorway developed by Lou from Old Rusted Chair! Each skein purchased supports abortion care local to Lou in Tenessee. Lou develops a brand-new color each year, and this pattern will work for any of them! If you have purchased a skein of this colorway, thank you for supporting this very important cause! I also developed this pattern to be knit by anyone, using straightforward techniques and designed especially for those very special One-Of-A-Kind speckled and variegated yarns in your stash!
Please note the yardage of my skein of yarn! I used 400 yards / 366 m of my skein so that a wide range of bases could be used for this pattern. Be sure to check the yardage on your skein, you may use all of your yarn. Because this shawl is knit from side to side, it’s easy to see the length of your project and how much yarn you’re using. I have written this pattern so that you can modify it by adding or omitting repeats depending on the amount of yarn in your skein.
Skill Level:
Beginner friendly!! I wrote this pattern to be very approachable to beginners who might want to venture into shawl knitting! No brioche knitting.
Techniques used:
knit, purl, yarn overs, knitting decrease (k2tog) and increase (kfbf), Twisted German Cast On, Elastic Bind Off, asymmetrical triangle shaping knit from side to side.
Construction Notes:
One-skein wonder!! I love shawls in this boomerang shape. No matter the size, they are so easy to wear. It’s also a great shape to play with one skein of sock yarn because it’s knit from side to side.
Grab your special skein of Rebel Girl by Old Rusted Chair, or any OOAK skein of speckled or variegated yarn in your stash, to knit up this super quick shawlette! Starting with very few stitches then increasing more stitches on the right edge while decreasing fewer stitches on the left edge creates an engaging shape that is knit on the bias. You will work through different textural stripes, beginning with Eyelet Ridges that are quite addicting! This is a great texture to show off those color changes in your yarn. Then you will alternate between Stockinette and Garter stripes, as well as the Eyelet Ridges, to showcase how the yarn looks on those different fabrics. This shawl is very repetitive so it’s soothing but also engaging.
I really do love this shawl shape! It’s great for all weather and can easily be worn loosely over your shoulders if you get chilly, or wound tightly around your neck on those cold days.
