Rathlin
This shawl design was inspired by the rugged beauty of northern seashores where shades of blues and greens interact in a timeless dance of ebb and flow. I designed this shawl to make the most of these two colors; the linear color transitions are reminiscent of the sea racing to the shore, while the lace emulates the frothy whitecaps of the waves.
Rathlin is worked in one piece from the top down starting with a simple set of stockinette stitch short rows, which shape the shawl into a versatile crescent. The deep border is worked next in a combination of unique lace and unusual color transitions. All this makes Rathlin a fun and interesting project that will fly off your needles and hold your attention through the last stitch.
The original sample used 389 yards (356 m) of the blue ‘Wave’ colorway and 367 yards (336 m) of the green ‘Seagrass’.
Rathlin was originally published as a part of an exclusive kit created for the 10th anniversary of The Tinsmith’s Wife in September 2018. The limited edition kits are available in the store and at https://tinsmithswife.com/.
