Rainbow Mitts
These mitts are designed to use up small amounts of sock yarn – only 170m, although if you knitted shorter cuffs you could cut this amount even more. I knitted a pair of socks with self-striping yarn, and wanted to design a project that would use up the remains of the ball. This yarn was West Yorkshire Spinners Cocktail yarn, in the Rum Paradise colourway. Each mitt used 5 repeats of the colour pattern. However, the textured pattern would look just as good in a solid colour. The mitts are designed to fit an average female hand, with a stretchy ribbed pattern meaning that they will fit quite flexibly. They have a long cuff which can fold back, a thumb opening, and a long cuff that can fold back or over the fingers. The cuffs can be longer or shorter depending on how much yarn you have left. They’re knitted mostly in the round, using double pointed needles or magic loop. Mitts are a perfect transitional accessory from winter into spring – it’s pretty much always cold enough to have a pair tucked in your pocket just in case!
