R2-D2 Mittens
One of the most popular droids in the Star Wars galaxy, R2-D2 is a common astromech droid—a brave and independent character who, as a result of his classification, is often unnoticed and underestimated by foes. Shaped like a small domed cylinder on moving hydraulic arm shafts and equipped with a language of beeps and whistles, Artoo is a veritable pocketknife with a myriad of tools and surprises hidden in his compartments. He can even fly! A key member of the Rebellion often paired with his counterpart C-3PO, this plucky droid plays an important role in nearly every film.
Knit from the bottom up in the round, these Fair Isle mittens start with a cable cast on and a simple 1x1 ribbed cuff. Stranded colorwork creates an R2-D2 on the hand side, while a secret message from the droid is worked across the palm. After the traditional mitten shaping is complete, the remaining stitches are grafted together, then an afterthought solid-colored thumb is worked.
