Queen of Hearts Scarf
The ruler of Wonderland and one of Disney’s early villains, the Queen of Hearts from Alice in Wonderland is arrogant and temperamental, with a penchant for ordering beheadings when things don’t go the way she wants. Living in a palace surrounded by a massive hedge maze where “all ways are her ways,” the tyrannical Queen has gardens full of white roses (that should have been red), an army of terrified playing cards, and a tiny, meek king for a husband—the only person she shows any kindness toward. Recognizable by her iconic black, red, white, and yellow chevron and heart motif dress, she carries a playing card heart fan, and her head is topped by a small golden crown. Her presence is as intimidating as her uncontrollable temper, and she is justly described by Alice as “a fat, pompous, bad-tempered old tyrant.”
One half of this double-knit graphic scarf is based on the Queen of Hearts’s dress with bold chevrons and checks, with the other half based on the shapes found in her manicured garden. Knit flat back and forth from end to end, each individual row is worked in two colors according to the charts. The other side of the scarf works up in the opposite colors, creating an inverted effect. A border stitch is worked at each end of the row to keep the edges as tidy as the hedge maze.
