It’s a puffin. What more can I say?

When you look directly at the knitting you only see stripes. When you move around the puffin appears and disappears.

You can use any thickness of yarn. I used Stylecraft Special DK in Black and Silver. At a gauge of 5 stitches to the inch the finished size of the illusion is approximately 45 cm (18”) square, which would make it suitable for a walll-hanging or cushion. I used 160 metres (180 yards) of each colour and extra is needed for the border.

Note: Even though puffins are black and white I do not recommend using these colours for an illusion as the contrast is too extreme and some of the shading effect is lost.
