Pattern Description from Heirloom Knitting: “The finished size of this beautiful stole is 72 inches by 32 inches (180 x 80cm), the inspiration for it is a traditional Unst shawl knitted approximately 100 years ago. I have recreated this as closely as possible as a stole, using similar patterns. Experienced knitters could re-interpret these directions and produce a shawl again if they would wish to.”

Materials:

• 10 x 1/2oz (14g) hanks of Jamieson & Smith’s Shetland Cobweb 1 ply - wound into balls
• Oddment of contrasting 2 ply Lace-weight wool - for waste wool casting on
• 2.25mm Circular needle - (British size 13), 40 and 60 cm long - I prefer to use the smaller length but it is up to the knitter to choose. Equivalent knitting needles could be used instead.
• Tapestry needle for final finishing
• Embroidery scissors - sharp pointed, for cutting out the Waste Wool Casting On
• Stitch holder

Errata:

Page 261 : The dressed tension should read ‘30 sts by 38 rows - approx 2.5 stitch repeats wide by 1 row repeat high’. Useful information : The stole centre is just over 40 ins long by approx 24 ins wide; the edging is approx 4 ins deep and each border is approx 12 ins deep.

Page 268 : Chart information should read ‘cast on 9 + 26 sts for edging - 35 sts in all’. Top Chart : First knit ‘dot’ on Row 1 should be a ‘slash’ decrease. Also, lower chart has the insertion repeats of 6 rows incorrectly charted - but the repeat information in text is correct.
