Adjustable, reversible, worked from side to side, straightforward lace and pointy bits: Pointer combines some of my favorite elements in shawls. One 100g skein of a DK weight yarn is enough to knit up both the size small and large shawls shown, but you can knit Pointer in any length that you like by changing the number of times you work the repeat. The diagonal lace consists of an easy repeat and this combined with the DK weight yarn ensures that this baby knits up pretty quickly. The points on the bottom edge of the shawl are created by casting on and casting off stitches along the way. Knit in either a solid or a pretty hand-dyed variegated yarn, why not add a little luxury to your wardrobe with Pointer?

Blue size small shawl: Shalimar Yarns Breathless DK 75% superwash merino wool, 15% cashmere, 10% silk; 270yds/247m per 100g; color: Billie’s Blues; 1 skein.
Red/pink variegated size large shawl: Malabrigo Silky Merino 51% silk, 49% merino wool; 150yds/137m per 50g; color: Amoroso; 2 skeins.

MATERIALS NEEDED
DK weight yarn, amount similar to amount listed above for the shawls pictured.
Approximate yardage: 185 (270) yds or 169 (247)m.
29-inch (or larger) US #6/4mm circular needle or size needed to obtain gauge.
1 stitch marker.
Darning needle.

GAUGE
17 sts/20 rows = 4 x 4 inches in lace pattern stitch AFTER BLOCKING. Gauge is not crucial for this project, however, to get the dimensions of the shawls pictured it is best to obtain gauge.

PATTERN NOTES
The shawl is worked from side to side. The shape is created by working a “knit front and back” increase on the left side of the shawl and a “slip slip knit” decrease on the right side of the shawl. The points are created by casting on and casting off stitches at a regular intervals, as described in the instructions. The pattern includes instructions on how to add extra length to the shawl. At the points where you cast on stitches, you do so at the beginning of the row using the cable cast on method and then work across those stitches when you work the row.

The shawl is blocked into shape. The elastic quality of the diagonal lace pattern allows the shawl to be stretched quite far, which will give maximum length and depth to the shawl. Stretching the shawl with blocking wire or pins will also open up the lace.
