I have always wanted a bunny and I’ll always have a rabbit the rest of my life.
- Amy Sedaris
This is a pattern for a stuffed rabbit toy worked using the Fair-Isle knitting technique. It is worked from the feet up and in the round, in 6 pieces, and with embroidery detail over the face. You may work it in 4 or more colours or simply 2. Instructions are given for 4 colour rabbit, but additional charts for 2 colour rabbit are included.
(both rabbits were worked the same, only the colours were changed to protect the innocent)
yarn:
Shetland by, Gathered Sheep Yarns
Light Fingering / 3 ply; 100% Shetland; 234yds (213.97m) / 55g or 96yds (87.8m)/20g mini skein
approximate yarn amounts:
4 colour Rabbit
MC (Ghoulish Cocktail) - 40g; 175yds (160m)
CC1 (New Beginings) - 30g; 130yds (120m)
CC2 (Jade Vine Flower) - 15g; 65yds (60m)
CC3 (Kamelos) - 5g; 22yds (20m)
2 colour Rabbit (colours may vary from sample)
MC (Orchid) - 50g; 219yds (200m)
CC1 (Dark Arts) - 45g; 197yds (180m)
needles:
2.0mm (us no 0) DPNs set of 5, 6in/15cm and circular for body
2.5mm (us no 1.5) DPNs set of 5, 6in/15cm and circular for body
or needles to achieve a relatively tight fabric after blocking
gauge:
7 sts x 8 rows = 1in/2.5cm on 2.5mm needles over stranded stockinette (before blocking)
7 sts x 10 rows = 1in/2.5cm on 2.0mm needles over single-colour stockinette
Gauge is not hugely important, but will affect the height vs width of your toy.
approximate finished size:
12in/30.5cm in height
additional tools:
needle to weave in ends, st markers, st holders/waste yarn, 2 buttons for eyes and yarn or floss to embroider nose, stuffing (keep it all wool and find stuffing at World of Wool - UK; CeCesWool, Shepherd’s Dream, or Home of Wool - US; Custom Woolen Mills Ltd. - Canada), additional yarn to make a pom tail or a faux fur pom
