This heavily cabled cowl literally stands up to wind, sleet, and cold. The lower edge is a simple 4-stitch I-cord into which stitches are picked up for the cowl body. An attached I-cord bind-off creates a similar look to the bind-off edge.
The dense cable pattern repeats over 8 stitches and 12 rounds, and ends with an attached I-cord bind-off to match the cast-on edge. The I-cord edges are joined with Kitchener stitch.
To prevent the top and bottom edgings from flaring, only 6 stitches are worked into the I-cord for every 8-stitch pattern repeat. The extra 2 stitches per repeat are increased during the first cable row, then decreased during the last cable row.
Instructions for the shorter version are biven first, followed by the instructions for the taller version in parentheses.
To adjust the circumference, work more or fewer I-cord rows in multiples of 6. Every 6 rows added or subtracted will adjust the final circumference by one 8-stitch cable repeat, which is about 1 1/4” (3.2 cm). You will need more yarn if you add more stitches.
To adjust the length, work more or fewer 12-round pattern repeats. Each 12 rounds added or subtracted will adjust the length by about 1 1/4” (3.2 cm).
